WELBRO Building Corporation Receives Central Florida Associated
Builders and Contractors' 2007 "Project of the Year" Award For the
Rosen Shingle Creek Resort
For nearly two decades the pinnacle of Central Florida construction awards has been The Project of the Year designation from Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Central Florida Chapter.
To earn this prestigious award, contractors must demonstrate a superior
level of performance excellence in meeting or exceeding project quality
requirements, design specifications, safety procedures, project team
collaboration, overcoming unique obstacles, meeting the project
schedule and satisfying the client.
For the 2nd time in the past 3 years, WELBRO Building Corporation received this prestigious award at ABC's Excellence in Construction
Awards Banquet on October 13,2007 for their premiere project Rosen Shingle Creek Resort. WELBRO also received the Project of the Year award in 2005 for the Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate.
Rosen
Shingle Creek is one of the largest full-service convention resorts in
Central Florida. The 230-acre resort offers 1,500 guest rooms and
suites, and 445,000 square feet of dedicated, state-of-the-art meeting
space that includes one of the nation's largest column-free ballrooms
at 95,000 sq. ft. The resort offers an array of amenities such as the
Spa at Shingle Creek (a full-service, 13,000-square-foot spa with nine
treatment rooms), a state-of-the-art Fitness Center, an 18- hole, par
72 (7,228 yard) championship golf course ranked one of the "Top 40 Best
New Courses in the U.S." by Golfweek Magazine, four outdoor swimming
pools, two lighted tennis courts, basketball, seasonal canoe trips,
nature trails, fishing, a sand volleyball court, horseshoe pit and more.
To
ensure that the facility was constructed on time, on budget and to a
high quality standard, WELBRO divided the facility into two teams. The
first team handled the construction of the Hotel Tower with the second
team constructing the Convention Center and the site work package
including the swimming pools, hardscape features, landscape and
irrigation.
Both teams reported to the senior WELBRO
executive in charge of overseeing the construction of entire resort.
Separating the project into two distinct parts allowed each team to
concentrate on their particular segment of the work without being
overwhelmed by the enormity of the project. The subcontract agreements
were crafted to require that each major subcontractor provide separate
leadership teams.
WELBRO also received an Eagle Award for the Pennsylvania Hotel, originally constructed in 1925,
the hotel has been transformed into a unique and modern 7 story, 128
room Courtyard by Marriott. With 68,092 sq.ft. of floor space, the
hotel features four "Parlor Suites" with a private kitchenette and
living room, a breakfast buffet, full service bar, indoor pool and spa,
fitness center and meeting room designed with multimedia capabilities
for easy presentation set up. This project also features several
historically renovated and preserved aspects including: period correct
restoration of the main lobby, marble stairway overlooking the lobby
and original checker board flooring in the main dining room. Located in
the heart of St. Petersburg, the Pennsylvania Hotel is close to both
business and leisure landmarks.
Construction of the hotel
tower consisted of post-tensioned concrete slabs over poured in place
concrete columns. A limited amount of self performed work was conducted
in trades such as masonry, carpentry and concrete.
WELBRO
Building Corporation has been building continuously in the Florida
commercial construction market for over 28 years and is consistently
ranked among the nation's top contractors by Engineering News Record
(ENR). WELBRO is a dominant force in the hotel/hospitality and
education markets. Other major project types include office buildings,
retail/commercial and special use facilities.
